Update on Youth Violence

We have recently received reports of threats being made between young people over social media. Many of these threats involve references to violence, knives and other weapons.

Following the recent stabbing incident in Rochdale town centre involving young people, we recognise the concern this has caused across our communities. We want to reassure residents that reports of threats are being taken seriously and investigated appropriately.

PC Peverley, investigating some of these incidents, said: "There has been understandable concern following the recent stabbing in Rochdale. Incidents such as this have a significant impact on young people, families and the wider community.

We are aware of reports of threats being made over social media and we take them extremely seriously. Threats of violence, whether made online or in person, can cause fear and distress and may constitute criminal offences.

Social media can sometimes escalate tensions quickly, particularly where messages are shared widely or taken out of context. We would encourage anyone who receives or witnesses threatening behaviour online to report it.

We will not tolerate threats of violence in any form. We will take robust action against those who seek to intimidate others, make threats, or carry weapons that put members of our community at risk."

To provide support and advice, a drop-in session has been arranged at Heywood Police Station on Monday 21 September 2026, between 2pm and 4pm. Anyone with concerns is welcome to attend and speak with officers about these issues, report concerns, or receive advice on staying safe online.
